3. Creating a character - the essentials

Post by Hector THE HAMMER Harken on Wed Jul 12, 2017 12:56 pm

The DM will happily help you create your character. Drop Hector a PM to get in touch!

If you haven't already discussed your character creation with the DM, here's what you need to know.

Your character consists of three parts. (example - an Elven Monk with the Hermit background).

Once you have decided upon those, your foundation is built! There will be a few customisation options after that, but that really is the main choice you need to make.

Here are the parts:

A RACE (your natural traits and some skill bonuses)
A CLASS (your role within the adventuring party, defines your skillset. The most important part of your character)
A BACKGROUND (where you came from, gives you some extra skills and proficiency with tools or languages)

Everything else (name, gender, appearance, backstory, reason for travelling to the Forged Lands) is up to you!

RACES:

  • Dragonborn
  • Dwarf
  • Elf
  • Gnome
  • Half Elf
  • Half Orc
  • Halfling
  • Human
  • Tiefling

CLASSES:

  • Barbarian (A fierce warrior of a primitive background who can enter a battle rage)
  • Bard (An inspiring magician whose power echoes the music of creation)
  • Cleric (A priestly champion who wields divine magic in service of a higher power)
  • Druid (A priest of the Old Faith, wielding the powers of nature— moonlight and plant growth, fire and lightning—and adopting animal forms)
  • Fighter (A master of martial combat, skilled with a variety of weapons and armor)
  • Monk (A master of martial arts, skilled with fighting hands and martial monk weapons)
  • Paladin (A holy warrior bound to a sacred oath)
  • Ranger (A master of ranged combat, one with nature)
  • Rogue (A scoundrel who uses stealth and trickery to overcome obstacles and enemies)
  • Sorcerer (A spellcaster who draws on inherent magic from a gift or bloodline)
  • Warlock (A wielder of magic that is derived from a bargain with an extraplanar entity)
  • Wizard (A scholarly magic-user capable of manipulating the structures of reality)

BACKGROUND:

  • Acolyte
  • Charlatan
  • Criminal (variant: Spy)
  • Entertainer (or Gladiator)
  • Folk Hero
  • Guild Artisan (variant: Guild Merchant)
  • Hermit
  • Noble (variant: Knight)
  • Outlander
  • Sage
  • Sailor (variant: Pirate)
  • Soldier
  • Urchin

These are the options presented in the Player's Handbook. There are official sources with further options, I am open to you using these but discuss with me first. If you are a first time player, it is best if you use a combination of race class and background listed here.

Currently existing representation within the Guild (race, class, background):

Artemesia Greenleaf - Human Druid Sage
Big Duncan - Dwarf Cleric Criminal
Gef - Halfling Warlock Spy
Grizella - Dwarf Barbarian Soldier
Nastie - Tiefling Sorcerer Folk Hero
Martin Dragonsbane - Dragonborn Paladin Acolyte
Red Scarlotte, Human Ranger Outlander
T-Fling - Tiefling Rogue Criminal
